Where the Big Kids Play Ball

Monday, May 30th, 2011

Yesterday we took our boys to their first big league baseball game.

The whole time we were there, Benny (our soon to be four-year-old) begged for it to be his turn to play.

And we told him, this is a special place — where only the best of the big kids get to play on the field. But he never gave up.

“Daddy! You tell them big kids that it’s my turn to play or you’ll take away all their toys!”

The One That Silenced All the Critics

Thursday, October 28th, 2010

When we first announced that we had decided to allow Jake to play football, we were met with a healthy amount of resistance.

“He’s too young.”

“You’re putting too much pressure on him.”

“Are you sure he’s going to like it?”

“What are you going to do if he wants to quit?”

It was enough to make us question our decision.

Because the image below is definitely one of a child being made to play football against his will.

Little Soldiers

Monday, September 27th, 2010

I’m going to have to take this photo to the coach, since it’s verifiable proof that at least three of the 11 boys on the field were actually LISTENING to him.

Oh — and we get two photos today! The 2nd one is Jake holding back his man. What I love about the image is that the poor kid that got assigned to Jake is pushing and grinding his feet, and Jake is holding him back WHILE STANDING ON HIS BACK FOOT. I swear, if this kid ever learns to lean forward coming off the line, he’d open holes big enough for The Fridge to get through.

Yes, I’m a proud football mama.

Football: Game One

Monday, September 13th, 2010

Last month, my seven-year-old son made the decision to turn our household upside-down and make our family “Event Widows” for the next ten weeks.

No weekend getaways. No quiet weeknights. No more empty laundry baskets. And CERTAINLY no more once-per-week grocery shopping trips.

Next month we’re buying acreage and some livestock so we can keep this boy fed.

But it’s all worth it . . . he was born to play this game.
