Fast Asleep

Tuesday, May 31st, 2011

Don’t blink. Don’t move. Don’t. BREATHE.

Whenever Benny falls asleep like this, it means that the house will be quiet for an undetermined amount of time.

So I just sit. And watch. And take it in.

And hopefully catch a nap before the small giant awakens.

What Mama Calls Him

Monday, May 23rd, 2011

Erma Bombeck once said that it’s best to test a name you’re about to give your child by opening the front door and screaming it at the top of your lungs over and over again. (Or something to that effect. I still haven’t successfully found the quote.)

Which is the perfect preface for this little story.

While we were standing in line at the store, a woman asked Benny what his name was. He immediately shyed away (I know, right?) and grabbed my leg for cover. (Because my legs are often mistaken for tree trunks.)

I took his hand and reassuringly said, “Go ahead, sweetie. It’s okay. Tell the lady what Mama calls you.”

And he said, “Mama calls me ‘Benny,’ or ‘Tigger’ or ‘BENJAMIN JUDE!’”

The One That Silenced All the Critics

Thursday, October 28th, 2010

When we first announced that we had decided to allow Jake to play football, we were met with a healthy amount of resistance.

“He’s too young.”

“You’re putting too much pressure on him.”

“Are you sure he’s going to like it?”

“What are you going to do if he wants to quit?”

It was enough to make us question our decision.

Because the image below is definitely one of a child being made to play football against his will.

A Little Too Quiet . . .

Wednesday, October 27th, 2010

Parents know what I’m talking about when I say, “A little too quiet.”

This is definitely not the worst thing that’s happened in that small window of time where my husband and I realized that the only noise our kids were making were stifled giggles and “shushing” sounds.

In fact, this is one of those times when we praised him for finding something constructive to do that didn’t involve writing on the wall or flushing my iPod down the toilet.

Post-Game Hug

Tuesday, October 26th, 2010

Jake ADORES his younger brother (when he wants him around). And Benny LOVES his older brother (when he’s not trying to kill him).

This is one of those rare moments where I actually capture both of them liking each other AT THE SAME TIME.

Birthday Party Fun

Monday, October 25th, 2010

I am blessed with a large family who know how to do birthday parties right.

And by right, I mean full of homemade birthday cards, cupcakes made from scratch, and free of drama.

And, of course, full of children eager to get their picture taken.

Rain Delay

Tuesday, October 19th, 2010

Xavier wants to go outside and play.

But it’s raining.

And he’s at his Grandma’s house.

And Grandmas don’t let little boys go outside an play in the rain.

So he’ll have to wait until it stops.

Or at least wait until he can be taken outside by his “cool” auntie, who will use the excuse “I did it for my photography blog” to dodge the menacing glare of a perturbed Grandmother.

Behind Bars

Monday, October 18th, 2010

Being an active three year old has its disadvantages. Like not being old enough to play football with all the other boys on the field.

He’s got a three-year wait before he can join them. Until then, he has to stay behind the barriers that separate the players from the dreamers.

Unless his dad decides to coach.

Which would then, according to league rules, reduce his wait to two years. (On good behavior, of course.)

Innocence

Tuesday, October 12th, 2010

The word that came to my mind after first seeing this image was “innocence.”

She has not a care in the world. She is completely content.

And 100% beautiful.

Dropping Back to Pass

Monday, October 4th, 2010

My husband would like to point out that his youngest child possesses the posture of Joe Montana and the speed of Jerry Rice.

I’d like to point out that he has the hands of a concert pianist and the grace of a bull in a china shop.

Which makes him really fun to watch. Even if he IS just playing pretend football.
