Sneak Peek — Samantha M.

October 16th, 2011

Today I had the privilege of working with Samantha, the daughter of the woman who gave me my first shot at being a “professional photographer.”

Shoots like today are uncommon. The weather was perfect. The venue was spectacular. And the Samantha and the camera were BFF’s all day long.

It’s easy to do Senior Portraits when your photographing someone you know. It’s even better when that someone you know is unabashedly gorgeous.

Thank you Sam and Sel . . . I had a wonderful day. :)

Fast Asleep

May 31st, 2011

Don’t blink. Don’t move. Don’t. BREATHE.

Whenever Benny falls asleep like this, it means that the house will be quiet for an undetermined amount of time.

So I just sit. And watch. And take it in.

And hopefully catch a nap before the small giant awakens.

Where the Big Kids Play Ball

May 30th, 2011

Yesterday we took our boys to their first big league baseball game.

The whole time we were there, Benny (our soon to be four-year-old) begged for it to be his turn to play.

And we told him, this is a special place — where only the best of the big kids get to play on the field. But he never gave up.

“Daddy! You tell them big kids that it’s my turn to play or you’ll take away all their toys!”

What Mama Calls Him

May 23rd, 2011

Erma Bombeck once said that it’s best to test a name you’re about to give your child by opening the front door and screaming it at the top of your lungs over and over again. (Or something to that effect. I still haven’t successfully found the quote.)

Which is the perfect preface for this little story.

While we were standing in line at the store, a woman asked Benny what his name was. He immediately shyed away (I know, right?) and grabbed my leg for cover. (Because my legs are often mistaken for tree trunks.)

I took his hand and reassuringly said, “Go ahead, sweetie. It’s okay. Tell the lady what Mama calls you.”

And he said, “Mama calls me ‘Benny,’ or ‘Tigger’ or ‘BENJAMIN JUDE!’”

Kryptonite

May 10th, 2011

To the naked eye, this is a fairly lame photo. It’s just a desk with some papers and a book on it. Plus some salami, cheese and a glass of water.

To me, this is a photo of my oldest son’s Kryptonite.

He hates to read. He hates homework. And he hates anything else that his teacher shoves in that yellow folder.

“Hate” is such a strong word. But it fits in this picture.

He hates it all.

Except for the salami, cheese and the glass of water.

The One That Silenced All the Critics

October 28th, 2010

When we first announced that we had decided to allow Jake to play football, we were met with a healthy amount of resistance.

“He’s too young.”

“You’re putting too much pressure on him.”

“Are you sure he’s going to like it?”

“What are you going to do if he wants to quit?”

It was enough to make us question our decision.

Because the image below is definitely one of a child being made to play football against his will.

A Little Too Quiet . . .

October 27th, 2010

Parents know what I’m talking about when I say, “A little too quiet.”

This is definitely not the worst thing that’s happened in that small window of time where my husband and I realized that the only noise our kids were making were stifled giggles and “shushing” sounds.

In fact, this is one of those times when we praised him for finding something constructive to do that didn’t involve writing on the wall or flushing my iPod down the toilet.

Post-Game Hug

October 26th, 2010

Jake ADORES his younger brother (when he wants him around). And Benny LOVES his older brother (when he’s not trying to kill him).

This is one of those rare moments where I actually capture both of them liking each other AT THE SAME TIME.

Birthday Party Fun

October 25th, 2010

I am blessed with a large family who know how to do birthday parties right.

And by right, I mean full of homemade birthday cards, cupcakes made from scratch, and free of drama.

And, of course, full of children eager to get their picture taken.

The Ultimate Tribute to Gas Grill Mortality

October 20th, 2010

This is my father’s barbecue.

It’s missing two dials (for which he uses pliers to adjust), is covered in rust and cobwebs, and singes the hair off of anyone who dares ignite it.

He refuses to let us replace it, stating that it works just as well today as it did when he first bought it.

Back in May of 1986.

Long live Frank’s grill.
